The Third Street Olympic Games is a fun filled family day where kids come together to harness the power of sports, community and giving. Grades K-5 compete in in a host of events that include "The Crazy Obstacle Course," "The Wild Water Balloon Toss" and "The Muddy Team Tug-of-War!” They’re also treated to a family style BBQ cooked by volunteer parents.
To gain admission to the games, students bring backpacks filled with brand new school supplies for children of local homeless families.
Third Street Elementary has teamed with School On Wheels, a non profit organization that provides one-on-one tutoring for children who live in shelters, motels, group foster homes and on the streets. In addition to weekly tutoring and mentoring, every student is given a backpack full of new school supplies. They also receive school uniforms, bus tokens and assistance with enrolling in school as well as a toll-free phone number for around-the-clock support.
Beyond learning the value of kid-to-kid philanthropy, extra money raised from the event goes to Friends of Third, a non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds in support of educational, cultural and enrichment programs at Third Street School. This includes a full-time librarian, a computer lab, additional field trips, class room funds, art, music, recycling programs and more…
