PTA Programs

Staff Appreciation Luncheons - Parents provide an eagerly anticipated pot luck luncheon to celebrate our entire school staff the day before school starts and the day after school ends. Join in the fun and help PTA make these occasions special.

Back to School Breakfast - On October 20th, come to school early and enjoy a continental breakfast before going to your child's classroom to meet with your child's teacher.

Disaster Preparedness - In September, families are given a bag and directions to prepare an emergency food & water kit for their child. The kits are stored at school in case there is an emergency requiring students to stay at school. PTA also makes sure each classroom has an emergency supply bag.

Traffic and School Safety - Drop off and pick up procedures help keep our children safe. Parent volunteers put on orange vests and lend a friendly hand to children getting in and out of cars. Parents also volunteer to help at other school activities, for example during the lunch periods. The School Safety Committee works with our assistant principal to assess school safety and implement change to keep our children safe.

Wonder of Reading Library - At Third Street, the library is a special place. Construction was funded in partnership with the Wonder of Reading Program. Please consider becoming a trained WOR volunteer to read one on one with children who need a little more confidence. Other library volunteers help our librarian keep the library in order. PTA supports the Student Librarian program and raises money for library extras by holding "Family Night."

Reflections - Annually, in the fall, National PTA sponsors a student arts competition. The theme this year is "Beauty Is" In the fall, our school holds a judges exhibit for all entrants, and winning works are forwarded to the PTA Tenth District competition. Volunteers are needed to help plan Third Street's Reflections event, hang the art and help out at the awards assembly. Click here to view last year's exhibition.

Red Ribbon Week - October 26-30, the school will be decorated in red to emphasize drug-free awareness. Volunteers coordinate this event with Mrs. Joann Mark, teacher in Room 5.

Canned Food Drive - This is an opportunity to share your bounty with those less fortunate at Thanksgiving time. Volunteers are needed to help with the collection. If you have a truck, we could use your help getting the collected items to the nearby PTA Tenth District office.

Scholastic Book Fair - The week of December 7th, go to the library to purchase books to benefit the Third Street Library. This is a big fundraiser for the library. Your child will create a wish list during a visit to the fair. Check your teacher's list and purchase a gift for the classroom. Check the library's wish list: you can purchase a book for the library too. Volunteers are needed for set-up, take down, sales and helping parents and children during the week of the fair.

Family Night - Monday, December 7th, the in-N-Out Burger truck will drive into Third Street's yard for families to enjoy a meal together to benefit the Library. That evening, go to the Winter Concert featuring Third Street's orchestra (4th & 5th grade students) and/or shop at the book fair. Volunteers are needed to help with planning, set-up and ticket sales.

Holiday New Toy Drive - In December, we collect unwrapped new toys to give to children in need to brighten their Holidays. Volunteers are needed to help with organizing the collection and delivering the donations to the designated center.

Teacher Appreciation Week - May 3 - 7, PTA volunteers will place small surprises in the teacher boxes to give our thanks for a great year. Suggestions and donations are welcomed.

Science Fair - Come see the amazing scientific displays created by our children. PTA sets up and takes down the projects. Families spend a May evening viewing the projects. Every participating student receives a certificate.

Yearbook - Each year a yearbook is published containing the memories of the school year. It isn't just for fifth grade, all classes are included. join the committee to help publish the yearbook. Take digital photographs of school events and submit them to the committee.

School Beautiful - Bring your gloves, garden tools, paint brushes and enthusiasm. On scheduled weekend days, volunteers get to work brightening our school. You can also choose a garden to tend during the year. let's keep our school beautiful!

Parent Copy Team - Trained volunteers copy classroom worksheets for teachers and approved school flyers for distribution. Get trained and join the team. Donations of reams of paper are appreciated.

Lost & Found - Each day, forgotten clothing and lunch boxes are collected and brought to the Lost & Found located in the cafeteria area. Kindergarten items are usually kept in the classroom or in the kindergarten play yard. Valuables left on campus are brought to the office. Unclaimed items are donated to Salvin Special Education Center or other charity organization at the winter, spring and summer breaks. Please label clothing, backpacks and lunch boxes with first and last names.

Salvin Special Education Center Out Grown Clothing and Toy Drive - Bring gently used clothing and toys to the collection box by the office. Salvin Special Ed is an LAUSD school in one of LA's most underprivileged areas. The children at Salvin have multiple handicaps, and their families truly appreciate Third Street's help.

Working together to support our school, we can make our wonderful school even greater. Please join with PTA to support the many activities our children enjoy during the school year, and to make our school special. Become a PTA member. Come to our monthly meetings. Enjoy a cup of coffee, meet other caring parents and learn about our school.
