IN RESPONSE TO ROBB ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TRAGEDY

As we continue to keep the victims of the senselessness tragedy that occurred last week at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas in our thoughts and prayers, we want to inform our community of the following:

Last week, via Blackboard, we provided our families with resources that provide guidance on how parents can address the tragedy with their child and how to respond to them if they have any questions. Both articles, Talking to Children About Violence: Tips for Parents and Teachers from the National Association of School Psychologists, and How to Talk to Kids about School Shootings were found on childmind.org. Families that need any additional support, should consider reaching out to LAUSD’s Student Health and Human Services (SHHS) hotline at 213-241-3840.

Teachers too were provided with various resources that they could use to help

our students cope with and process this tragedy. Each individual teacher will use their professional judgment and discretion to determine whether or not there is a need to discuss the incident with a student or their class.

Our school has safety practices and crisis preparedness procedures in place to keep our students and staff safe. For a general overview of how our school responds to different types of emergencies, families can check https://achieve.lausd.net/Page/4886. Families can also view our school's lockdown protocol.

We will be reviewing lockdown procedures with our students on Tuesday, May 31 and hold a lockdown drill in the afternoon.

Aside from June Street A, all school entrances will remain closed between 8:15 AM and 2:15 PM. June Street A's doors will remain open during school hours up till 3:30 PM so long as the door is supervised. In instances where our supervision staff needs to step away, the door will be closed. Additionally, our faculty lot gate will remain closed at all times. Parents who need to pick up their children from Beyond the Bell, JMG, or Kidskor after 3:30 PM will be admitted through the faculty lot gate by after school program staff.

There is no place for gun violence in our schools or communities. This Friday, we are asking all of our community to wear orange, the defining color of the gun violence prevention movement to show our support of Robb Elementary in Uvalde Texas.
