SCHOOL FOR ADVANCED STUDIES (SAS)

As a School for Advanced Studies (SAS), 3rd Street is proud to offer and be recognized by LAUSD as a school that provides exemplary, innovative, and research-based differentiated curriculum and instruction for gifted/high ability learners. At 3rd Street, our instruction is based on the principle that all students are to receive an education appropriate to their individual capabilities, interests, and needs, and that students have learning opportunities that help develop their abilities to the highest level. By providing high-quality differentiated instruction with an emphasis on depth, complexity, acceleration and novelty, our school offers high-level academic opportunities that meet the unique educational needs of K–12 gifted learners, identified in the Intellectual, High Achievement, Specific Academic, Creative and Leadership Ability categories or verified based on critical thinking/achievement.

At 3rd Street, all students who are identified gifted by LAUSD or meet the SAS eligibility criteria are clustered together, but distributed over several classrooms. Being a School for Advanced Studies also requires that teachers working with the gifted/SAS cluster of students participate annually in sixteen hours of professional development specifically tailored to address the unique academic and social-emotional needs of gifted/talented learners. Additionally, in order to maintain the school’s SAS designation, 3rd Street must undergo a rigorous application process every five years.
